mineral springs

For thousands of years, mineral springs have been considered places of healing, renewal, and refreshment, especially in the mountains. Manitou Springs continues that tradition into the present day, with 8 unique mineral springs that each have their own character, tasting experiences, and interesting histories. A walking tour is the perfect way to experience the springs, but it's worth knowing the history of each spring before you head out. Our real estate agents have the fascinating details on the 8 mineral springs that you'll find around Manitou Springs.

  • 7 Minute Spring
Originally drilled for the garden of the Mansions Hotel more than 100 years ago, 7 Minute Spring earned its name because it erupts every 7 minutes. The eruptions are caused by natural carbonation in the water. This spring has been re-drilled twice since the 1990s in order to keep the water flowing.

  • Cheyenne Spring
Originally, Cheyenne Spring was a local gathering place, with the Manitou Spa Building being constructed there in the late 1800s. While the Manitou Spa Building is no longer there, this spring now feeds a bronze fountain designed by sculptor Paul Rogers – a great example of the mixture of art and nature you'll find near Manitou Springs homes for sale.

  • Iron Spring Geyser
The water of Iron Spring Geyser was once prized for its healing properties and high iron content, which helped make it the most popular spring in the community for a time. A resident with entrepreneurial spirit drilled a new spring here in 1910, increasing its popularity by adding orange and lemon flavoring to the water.

  • Navajo Spring
Found near the Ute Pass Trail, which was once widely used by indigenous peoples, adventurers, and settlers, Navajo Spring eventually became the site of a bottling works. Today, the spring can be found just behind Patsy's Candy Store.

  • Snoshone Spring
Snoshone Spring is a great example of why many people visited the springs around Manitou Springs for their alleged healing properties, a trend which peaked in the 1800s before modern medicine. This spring does have the highest content of many types of minerals compared to the other springs around the community.

  • Stratton Spring
Drilled for practical reasons and as a service to the community during the Great Depression, Stratton Spring is best known today for having a location that intersects the history of Manitou Springs. The site where this spring is located was once a hub for trails before becoming an intersection of Manitou Springs' historic trolley lines. Today, the modern highway system also passes right by Stratton Spring's location.

  • Twin Spring
While each spring has a unique, appealing flavor profile and taste, many locals will tell you that the water from the Twin Spring is the tastiest that you'll find in Manitou Springs. Water from this spring is commonly used in two popular drinks, Manitou Lemonade, and Manitou Mojitos. The water from this spring is high in potassium and has a sweet flavor, which is why it's prized in delicious drinks.

  • Wheeler Spring
Donated to the community by Jerome Wheeler, a local businessman and entrepreneur, Wheeler Spring is a reminder of how the mineral springs have shaped local industry over the centuries. Wheeler was president of the Manitou Mineral Bottling Company, in addition to his many other roles in local businesses.
